"The reason I wrote Second Sunday is that I wanted to write
about church life from the other side of the pulpit-- with the
view-points, likes and dislikes of all of those pew-occupying "Sunday-go-to-meeting" folk
in mind.
I also have a real heart for the hard working women in every church
and wanted to travel into those incredible inner corridors of black
church life where they cook the food for the dinners after service,
clean the sanctuary, comfort the grieves and just about run every
auxiliary in the place.
I hope with Second Sunday I have also captured the hearts of the
seasoned seniors who have seen the power of God moving in their
lives as well as those of their fellow church members, the deacons
and other laymen who are called to help the pastor facilitate "the
life of the church," those would-be/wanna-be members with
hearts yearning for a good church home, and those memorable church
folk who sometimes conveniently forget that God is still on the
Throne and try to run their churches with less than adequate and
admirable worldly means.
In Second Sunday, I wanted to write about going to church in
my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. Or, to be more exact, I just
wanted to go back home to the north side of St. Louis and be back
at church with "the folk" right in the middle of the
1970s. I hope I have been successful when delving into the hearts,
motives, prayer lives, and even antics of the people who made up
the membership of the fictitious Gethsemane Missionary Baptist
Church and that it is a book that causes you to laugh, and cry
(or is it laugh until you cry?!).
And finally, I wrote Second Sunday because I simply wanted to
tell another story about my favorite subject--folks at church!"
